HEADLINING THE ART AT COACHELLA 2019

Motion Factory’s creative director and art director rocked the Coachella Music Festival this year as featured artists, having been personally requested by Goldenvoice CEO, Paul Tollet, to headline the festival. Together they created a massive, multimedia art installation that rose over 8 stories high and featured a cast and crew of over 250 people, making it one of the most elaborate art pieces ever built at Coachella. Motion Factory was able to deliver a variety of multimedia elements to this piece, showcasing their work across a massive, 3 story, LED video wall that towered above the polo fields. Their work was also distributed across 7 different different video screens throughout the installation as well as live streamed on Coachella’s Youtube channel during the festival.

This installation was a created by Motion Factory’s Creative Director, Derek Doublin, along with MF’s art director, Vanessa Bonet. The piece acted as a medley of different artistic mediums. Robotics and animatronics, multimedia elements, animations, smoke fx, mechanical gags, puppetry, mask making and lighting fx were all mashed together into one massive performance art piece that defied explanation. Animatronic hippos hung from the exterior, 70 feet in the air, while an RC robot made out of junk circled the perimeter. Every room in every inch of the installation was alive with kinetic special fx. The cast and crew worked and performed nonstop for 12 hours a day throughout all 6 days of the festival. The piece was a 360 degree immersive experience with 8 theatrical stages surrounding the structure along with interactive elements that allowed audiences to engage with the performers inside. At any given angle and at anytime during the event, a performance could be seen somewhere on the installation. This piece was the result of 9 hard months of endless work, 4 months of construction and a countless amount of sleepless nights.

Very few production companies can cite such a unique artistic achievement on their record, and we are very proud that Coachella entrusted us to create their biggest installation to date.
